Radon in the USA

As can be seen much of the United States is considered “very high” (Red) for the propensity of Radon gas exposure/buildup inside the home.  Texas is one of few states considered in the “moderate” category as a whole.

Covenant Inspections has invested in professional radon monitoring/testing equipment made by SunNuclear.  This is a Continuous Monitoring Device (a CMD), this type of device provides the following advantages over the passive testing kits purchased at home stores or on-line:

A CMD provides:

  • Immediate results upon completion of the standard 48 hour test; NO mailing off to wait several days for lab results (many times samples are delayed in transit, causing a null result and waste of money.

  • A professional customized report with site pictures, especially important in the event evidence is required.

  • Both interval and final readings, to indicate any attempted sabotage of the device or environment (by an unscrupulous seller or possibly seller’s agent; it has happened).

  • Track temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure, this is useful for the same reason above and to aide in deciphering the data.

  • Track movement of the CMD, again to indicate attempted sabotage.

Passive Devices shortcomings:

  • Must be mailed to a lab, if delayed a voided sample is likely = wasted time and money!

  • No ability to verify the integrity of the testing environment = possible sabotage.

  • 48 hour minimum sample test time plus shipment time plus lab processing time = 4 to 5 days minimum.

  • The off the shelf DIY kits have been regarded as untrustworthy; the kit may catch radon counts while sitting on the store shelf before purchase.

  • Chain-of-custody issues, because the sample eventually must be sent to a lab, the original tester looses custody control, thus questions can arise especially in a real estate transaction.
